Title: Emanation of Algorithmic Bias
Medium: Layered Paper in Shadowbox
Size: (8.75”x8.75”x1.25”)
The age of artificial intelligence, with its exponential growth of neural network systems, has become a veiled omnipresent extension of our lives. These systems are often described as “Black Boxes” because their internal structure is poorly understood even by the homogenous elite that designs them. This new backbone of decision engines exists at every level of society from image and voice recognition to determining job candidates and criminal intent. The public is often left in the dark as to where and how these systems are employed. These layered self-organizing webs of digital synapses rely on massive data sets to make their internal connections and verdicts. Enabling biases from our world regarding race, culture, gender, education, and others to be expressed and unchecked. We must not be fooled into the illusion that they are an infallible tool, for machines are only as good as the data and humans that create them.
